Retired learning support aide, patient on the tricky days
About Bernadette
I worked as a learning support officer in primary schools for twenty six years, the last eleven of them in a support unit. Most of that time was spent with children who needed more from an adult than an ordinary school day allows.
That is the work I am best at, and it is what I would like to keep doing two or three days a week now that I have finished up.
What it looks like in practice: I read the routine you give me and I follow it. I do not quietly change how you do things because I think I know better. If your child needs the same three steps in the same order before they will sit down at the table, then that is what we do, every time, including on the days we are running late. Most of this job is consistency.
I am calm and I am not easily rattled. I have never once raised my voice at a child, and that includes some very hard afternoons. If there is a meltdown I will wait it out, and afterwards I will tell you about it plainly, without turning it into a story about how difficult it was for me.
I have basic Auslan from my years in the unit. Enough for signs and simple sentences, not enough to call myself fluent, and I would not want you to think otherwise.
Two practical things. I take two families at a time and no more, because I would rather do this properly for two than badly for five. And I do not drive, so I need to be walking distance or on a bus route from Earlwood.

Mother of two, free while my kids are at school
I am Trang. My two children are at primary school in Earlwood, so during school hours I am free and I would like to look after small children near me. I raised my own two babies and I helped my sister with her three, so I know how to feed, change and settle. Vietnamese and English both fine.

20 years around babies, three of them my own
My name is Amira and I have lived in Canterbury for sixteen years. I have three children of my own, the youngest is seven, and before them I helped to raise my brother's four children in Tripoli. So you can say I have been holding babies for twenty years now. I am very calm. This is the main thing I want you to know about me. Crying does not upset me. Teething does not upset me.
