The line is regularity, not hours.

Where the line falls

Twenty hours in one week does not make somebody a nanny, and six hours a week for a year does. The test is whether the arrangement stands: the odd Saturday night is babysitting, and the same afternoons every week with a say in how the day runs is nanny work.

It is why nobody here picks a job title. When someone lists, they say whether they want casual nights and weekends, the same days each week, or both.

The Check is yours to sight

A privately arranged babysitter in your own home does not need a Working With Children Check. A nanny, au pair or tutor does, and you are the one expected to verify it.

Verifying a Check is free and takes about two minutes on the register that issued it. In NSW, verifying in your own name also means the Office of the Children's Guardian tells you if their status changes.

About half sit in that range, and the rest split above and below it. It is not a rate card, and nobody is bound by it. Many of the people in it also take casual evenings, so its lower end can be a casual rate rather than a nanny one. Where a nanny lands depends on the number of children, the hours, and what the job asks for beyond supervision.

What sits on top of the rate

Employ someone for regular hours and you are their employer rather than their customer. Most nanny roles sit at Level 2 of the Miscellaneous Award, where the minimum for a casual on weekday daytime hours has been $33.85 an hour since July 2026.

Super is 12%, owed once they work more than 30 hours a week whatever you pay them, and in NSW you need workers insurance once your estimated annual wages pass $7,500. Work all of it into the number at the point you agree it.

We need a nanny. Where do we start?
Start with the shape, not the search: which days, which hours, and what the job includes beyond being with the children. That decision is what everything else hangs off, because a Tuesday-and-Thursday afternoon role and a five-day full-time one attract different people. Then read the profiles nearest you and message the two or three whose radius and rate fit, or post the job instead. What is the difference between a nanny and a babysitter?
Stop counting hours and ask whether the arrangement is a standing one. Somebody you ask over for the odd Friday evening is babysitting. Somebody who has fixed days, a routine, and responsibility for how the day runs is doing nanny work, whether or not either of you uses the word. The law draws its line in much the same place wherever you are, and it settles one thing: where a Working With Children Check is required it is the nanny arrangement that needs it, and a babysitter you arrange privately for an evening in your own home usually does not. How much does a nanny cost?
Nannies here usually ask between $35 and $41 an hour, going by the 353 profiles that state one. Across Sydney more broadly, most nannies ask between $30 and $45 an hour. That is the rate on a profile rather than a quote for a standing arrangement, and what regular hours settle at is between you and them. Do I have to check the Working With Children Check myself?
Yes, and it is worth knowing that before you start looking. Every Check scheme was built around organisations: an employer or an agency registers with the state's screening body and verifies its people through a portal. A household is not an organisation, so for ongoing care the verifying falls to you, and nobody sends a reminder. Most states publish a checker a parent can use directly. In NSW it asks for their WWC number, their family name and their date of birth, entered on the Children's Guardian's own site before day one. No fee, about two minutes. What does the verified badge on a nanny's profile mean?
The badge means we checked their ID and their WWCC ourselves, with the register in the state that issued it, not that they ticked a box. Treat it as a head start rather than a substitute. For ongoing care you still want the Check verified in your own name, and in NSW that is also what puts you on the list the Office writes to. A profile without a badge says so in the same plain words and in the same place a badge would sit. References, first aid certificates and claimed experience are outside what we check. How do I write a nanny ad?
In your own words, and in detail. Write the days and the hours you need covered, the ages of the children, the date you want to start, and what the job asks for beyond supervision: the school run, cooking, driving, a language spoken at home. Put the rate you have in mind in there as well. Nothing in the form marks a job as nanny work rather than babysitting, so words like ongoing and the same days each week have to come from you.
