Date night ideas in Sydney for parents (2026)

Twelve date night ideas in Sydney that get you home by about 11, with what each costs for two and what the babysitter costs for the evening.

Our date nights get planned backwards from the babysitter: who can come, until when, and how they're getting home, so each idea says when you'll be done and prices the babysitter's evening beside the date itself. Nobody paid to be on this list, and the prices are the ones each place published in October 2026.

Cheap date night ideas in Sydney, under $60 for two

These three come in under $60 for the two of you, which on most of our nights out makes the babysitter the biggest bill of the evening by a long way.

1. Art After Hours

  • The Domain
  • Free entry, plus dinner for two
  • Babysitter, 4.5 hours: about $145

The Art Gallery of NSW stays open until 10pm every Wednesday, with talks, films and a bar, and getting in is free. The paid exhibitions are two for one after 5pm that night. A free shuttle runs from Town Hall every 20 minutes between 7 and 10pm, so nobody has to find a park in the Domain.

Wednesdays only. Food and drink at the gallery are extra, and we couldn't check their prices.

9pm

2. $20 night at The Henson

  • Marrickville
  • $40–60 for two
  • Babysitter, 4 hours: about $130

The Henson in Marrickville has curry bowls for $20 on Monday, schnitzels for $20 on Tuesday with $20 jugs of beer, and a $30 kitchen special on Wednesday with trivia at 7pm, which you book. The kitchen shuts at 9pm early in the week. We've been home at half past nine and found the babysitter still on the first chapter.

The regular menu's prices aren't online, so plan around the $20 nights.

Ends by

9pm

3. An early film at the Ritz

  • Randwick
  • $24–55 for two
  • Babysitter, 4 hours: about $130

The Ritz has been showing films in Randwick since 1937, and the art deco building still looks the part. Tickets are $27.50 each, or $12 on Cheap Tuesday, so the two of you get in for $24.

Pick a session that ends by 9. Special events and public holidays are priced differently.

Dinner by the water

Both of these take longer to get to than they take to eat, so the babysitter's hours run well past the meal. They're the nights I'd book a week out.

Ends by

8:30pm

4. Fish and chips at Watsons Bay

  • Watsons Bay
  • $46–150 for two
  • Babysitter, 5 hours: about $160

Doyles on the Wharf sells takeaway fish and chips for $22.90, and you can eat them by the water. Sit down at Doyles on the Beach and fish and chips run $55.90 to $73.90 each before drinks, with 10% added on weekends. Dinner there runs 5 to 8:30pm Monday to Thursday, 5:30 to 9pm Friday and Saturday.

We couldn't confirm the evening ferry. Check Trip Planner, or drive.

Ends by

9pm

5. The ferry to Manly for dinner

  • Circular Quay to Manly
  • Up to $19.30 in fares, plus dinner for two
  • Babysitter, 5 hours: about $160

The F1 leaves Circular Quay from Wharf 3 and takes about 30 minutes, and it's still the best half hour you can spend on a Sydney Opal card. From Friday to Sunday the daily cap is $9.65 an adult, so the two of you can't pay more than $19.30 in fares, the train to the Quay included. Walk along to Shelly Beach, eat wherever you end up, and aim for a ferry back by half past eight.

Monday to Thursday the daily cap is $19.30 each, so this one is a weekend night.

A show or a laugh

Early sessions are the trick here. A 7:30pm start with no interval has you out the door before quarter past nine.

Ends by

9:10pm

6. A play at the Ensemble

  • Kirribilli
  • $60–190 for two
  • Babysitter, 4 hours: about $130

The Ensemble has been putting on plays by the harbour in Kirribilli since 1958. Snowflake runs from 30 October to 21 November 2026, Tuesday to Saturday at 7:30pm, an hour and 40 minutes with no interval. Tickets are $95 each in season, a few go for $30 on Fridays, and the Christmas show follows from 27 November.

Under 30? Tickets are $46. Some nights sell out.

Ends by

9:30pm

7. Stand-up at the Comedy Store

  • Moore Park
  • From $50 for two
  • Babysitter, 4 hours: about $130

The Comedy Store at the Entertainment Quarter runs Cost of Living Comedy on Thursdays at 7:30pm, $25 each with a drink included. On a Saturday the Showcase starts at 6:30pm, doors at 6. Skip the 8:30pm late show; that one's for people without a babysitter on the clock.

The venue doesn't publish finish times, so I've allowed two hours.

Day dates, when the babysitter comes after lunch

Nobody has to do a bedtime, and you're home before dinner. For the parent who's asleep on the couch by nine, which in our house is both of us, an afternoon out beats an evening.

Ends by

5pm

8. The Bay Run

  • Iron Cove
  • Free for two
  • Babysitter, 3.5 hours: about $110

The Bay Run is a flat 7 km loop around Iron Cove, through Rozelle, Lilyfield, Haberfield, Five Dock and Drummoyne, and most of it is within about 20 metres of the water. Start at King George Park, Leichhardt Park or Callan Park, and allow an hour and a half at a walk, longer with a coffee.

It's busy with bikes, so stay on the walking path where it's separate.

Ends by

4pm

9. Bondi to Bronte on foot

  • Bondi
  • Free for two
  • Babysitter, 4 hours: about $130

The coastal walk from the south end of Bondi to Bronte is about 2.5 km, an hour one way at a stroll. Do it in the afternoon rather than chasing a sunset: on this side of the city the sun goes down behind the land, not over the sea. Swim at Bronte, then walk back.

Ends by

7pm

10. A picnic at Balls Head

  • Waverton
  • Free, plus the picnic for two
  • Babysitter, 4 hours: about $130

Balls Head Reserve looks across the harbour to the Bridge and the city, and it has barbecues and picnic areas. It's a five to ten minute walk from Waverton station, or there's a car park on the headland. Pack the food nobody at home lets you eat in peace.

This summer only

Outdoor cinema isn't on this list. Films start at dusk, around 8:30, and finish between 10:30 and 11, so the babysitter is booked to 11:30 at least. Moonlight Cinema in Centennial Park says November to March this season, and OpenAir at Mrs Macquaries Point hadn't confirmed its 2027 dates when I checked in October.

Ends by

9:30pm

11. Carols in the Domain

  • The Domain
  • Free for two
  • Babysitter, 5 hours: about $160

Carols in the Domain is on Saturday 19 December 2026. The site opens at 1pm, the concert starts at 7:30pm, and it's free. We'd go late, sit toward the back, and slip out around half past nine.

People are still leaving the Domain at 11:30pm, so go before the end.

Ends by

9:15pm

12. The 9pm fireworks

  • Sydney Harbour
  • Free for two
  • Babysitter, 4 hours: about $130

New Year's Eve in Sydney has a 9pm fireworks show before the midnight one. Projections light the Bridge pylons from 8:30pm, the fireworks go at 9, and the Harbour of Light boats follow at 9:15. You get the harbour lit up without anyone asleep on your shoulders.

Pick a spot you can walk home from. The crowds around the harbour take a while to clear.

What the babysitter costs for a night out

Sydney babysitters ask $32 an hour at the median, from the 217 in Greater Sydney who had set a rate here on 27 September 2026. That's what they ask at the start of their range, not an award rate and not what anyone was paid, and it's what every card above is priced on. Babysitter rates in Sydney has the full spread and what moves it.

If you employ the babysitter rather than book them for the odd night, the Miscellaneous Award applies, and from 1 July 2026 the floor is $37.32 an hour for an adult casual after 7pm or on a Saturday, so a four-hour evening comes to just under $150. New Year's Eve 2026 is a Thursday, so the evening rate runs right up to midnight, and the public holiday rate of $64.35 only starts once it's 1 January. Babysitters keep 100% of what you pay them, and we never touch payments.

Settle these when you book a night out

  • The time you'll be home, and that you'll text if it moves
  • How they're getting home, and who pays for the ride if it's late
  • The rate for the evening, agreed before the night
  • Bedtime, and what happens if it doesn't go to plan

The rest of the first message, and what a good answer sounds like, is in questions to ask a babysitter.

What we do, and what is yours

Each babysitter's profile shows their suburb, the rate where they've set one, the ages they've looked after, and whether we've checked their ID and Working With Children Check. Find a babysitter in Sydney covers choosing one and the short first booking that comes before a big night. The rest is yours: the message, the rate, the table by the water, and getting home by 11.
