In New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania, not for casual, privately arranged babysitting in a family's own home. Queensland does require one for any paid babysitting. If you work as a nanny, au pair, or tutor, meaning regular ongoing care rather than the occasional evening, you do need one, and the parent is expected to verify it. What it costs depends on the state: $112 in NSW for five years, and from $87 to $145 elsewhere.

How do I get verified?

You confirm a government photo ID with a matching selfie through Didit, our identity provider, which takes about two minutes, and give us your legal name, date of birth, and check number (and, for a Queensland blue card, its issue number). We then check your status with the register that issued it ourselves, usually within 48 hours. Today we can check clearances issued in New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory. If it comes back cleared and the details match your ID, your badge goes live with the month we checked. It is free.
