Question 1

What is the difference between a nanny and a babysitter?

Accepted Answer

In everyday use, not much — most people say babysitter for both. What decides it in Victoria is how the work is arranged rather than how many hours it runs: nannies and in-home carers are child-related work under the Act, and a private arrangement a family makes directly with a sitter is not on that list. That matters for one reason. Where a Working With Children Check is required, you as the parent are the one expected to see it.

Question 2

How much does a nanny cost in Portarlington?

Accepted Answer

Nannies near Portarlington are asking between $20 and $40 an hour, across 4 profiles that state a rate. That is the rate they put on a profile, not a quote for a standing arrangement. What ongoing hours settle at is between you and them, and we take no part in it. Agree the rate, the hours, and what happens when plans change before the first day, in writing.

Question 3

Can you claim a nanny on Centrelink or the Child Care Subsidy?

Accepted Answer

No. The Child Care Subsidy is only paid for care at an approved child care service, and a nanny you hire yourself is not one. The single route to a subsidised educator in your own home is In Home Care, and it is narrow: you have to be eligible for the subsidy, show that no other approved care is available or suitable, and meet at least one of non-standard or variable hours, geographic isolation, or complex needs. Families apply through their state's In Home Care Support Agency, the educator comes from an approved provider, and the hours are charged per family instead of per child.

Question 4

Do I have to check my nanny's Working With Children Check?

Accepted Answer

Yes. For regular ongoing care the duty to verify sits with you, because there is no employer to hand it to. Ask for their family name and card number, and check it with the Service Victoria status checker before the first day. It is free and takes about two minutes. Victoria does not write to you afterwards, so the answer is true on the day you run it.

Question 5

What does the verified badge on a nanny's profile mean?

Accepted Answer

The badge means we checked their ID and their WWCC with Service Victoria ourselves, not that they ticked a box. It is the check you would run yourself, already done once. A check is only true on the day it is run, so for ongoing care run your own as well: it is free with Service Victoria and takes about two minutes. We do not check references, first aid certificates, or claimed experience. Those sit on a profile as the nanny's own statement, labelled that way.

Question 6

Are these different people from the babysitters in Portarlington?

Accepted Answer

Largely the same people. 6 of the 6 babysitters and nannies near Portarlington said they want regular work, and one person can want both, so a profile can appear on both pages. This one leaves out the ones who only want the occasional evening.

Question 7

Is a live-in nanny legal in Australia?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and a live-in nanny is almost always an employee, covered by the Miscellaneous Award. From 1 July 2026 the award's adult minimum for daytime weekday hours is $25.74 an hour employed permanently or $32.18 casually, more outside those hours, and superannuation is owed once someone works more than 30 hours in a week. A room and meals are not a substitute for wages: deducting board from pay needs their written authorisation and has to be principally for their benefit.

Question 8

Do you employ the nanny, or handle pay?

Accepted Answer

Neither. We are an introduction service: you find each other here and everything after that is between the two of you, including the rate, the hours, tax, and insurance. We take no commission and never touch a payment, so what you agree is what they are paid.
