What is the difference between a nanny and a babysitter?

In everyday use, not much — most people say babysitter for both. In NSW the line is regularity rather than hours: occasional evenings are babysitting, while the same days each week is nanny work, whatever anyone calls it. That matters for one reason. A nanny needs a Working With Children Check and you are the one expected to verify it. A privately arranged babysitter in your own home is not legally required to hold one.

How much does a nanny cost in The Entrance?

Not enough nannies near The Entrance have published a rate for us to give a local range, and we would rather say that than make one up. Across Sydney, most nannies ask between $30 and $45 an hour. Agree the rate, the hours, and what happens when plans change before the first day, in writing.

Can you claim a nanny on Centrelink or the Child Care Subsidy?

No. The Child Care Subsidy is only paid for care at an approved child care service, and a nanny you hire yourself is not one. The single route to a subsidised educator in your own home is In Home Care, and it is narrow: you have to be eligible for the subsidy, show that no other approved care is available or suitable, and meet at least one of non-standard or variable hours, geographic isolation, or complex needs. Families apply through their state's In Home Care Support Agency, the educator comes from an approved provider, and the hours are charged per family instead of per child.

Do I have to check my nanny's Working With Children Check?

Yes. For regular ongoing care the duty to verify sits with you, because there is no employer to hand it to. Ask for their WWC number, family name, and date of birth, and check it on the Office of the Children’s Guardian site before the first day. It is free and takes about two minutes. Once you have verified someone, the Office tells you if their status changes.

What does the verified badge on a nanny's profile mean?

The badge means we checked their ID and their WWCC with the NSW Children's Guardian ourselves, not that they ticked a box. It is the WWCC check you would run yourself, already done once. For ongoing care still run your own, because verifying it in your name is what gets you told if their status later changes. We do not check references, first aid certificates, or claimed experience. Those sit on a profile as the nanny's own statement, labelled that way.

Are these different people from the babysitters in The Entrance?

Largely the same people. 3 of the 4 babysitters and nannies near The Entrance said they want regular work, and one person can want both, so a profile can appear on both pages. This one leaves out the ones who only want the occasional evening.

Question 7

Is a live-in nanny legal in Australia?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and a live-in nanny is almost always an employee, covered by the Miscellaneous Award. From 1 July 2026 the award's adult minimum for daytime weekday hours is $25.74 an hour employed permanently or $32.18 casually, more outside those hours, and superannuation is owed once someone works more than 30 hours in a week. A room and meals are not a substitute for wages: deducting board from pay needs their written authorisation and has to be principally for their benefit.

Do you employ the nanny, or handle pay?

Neither. We are an introduction service: you find each other here and everything after that is between the two of you, including the rate, the hours, tax, and insurance. We take no commission and never touch a payment, so what you agree is what they are paid.
